Easy Red 1: a 4 dollar, large-scale WW2 shooter that feels like an highly ambitious Operation Flashpoint mod that came out twenty years ago. the production quality is *raw*, but it is filled with soul and it feels someone actually wanted to make their dream fps game despite having a budget of like 10 dollars: store.steampowered.com/app/741670/Easy_Red/UFO: Extraterrestrials: a very ambitious and slow, but rewarding XCOM-alike that follows the gameplay design formula of the original XCOM games. the revamped version of this game that came out in late 2023 is actually worse, but the original can still be bought on key resellers for around 5 dollars: www.g2a.com/ufo-extraterrestrials-gold-steam-key-global-i10000043022002
Brigade E5 New Jagged Union - very ambitious, granular, and absurdly hard but rewarding Jagged Alliance clone with a very realistic combat system if that's your kind of thing. it's a very pure game and it was also basically put together by guys pitching ideas together on a forum to a developer, which explains many of its gameplay design facets. the Steam version works but is kinda broken, the GOG version is more stable. you can get it on GOG for like 4 dollars: www.gog.com/en/game/brigade_e5_new_jagged_union
POSTWORLD: basically a weird but enjoyable mishmash of every post-apocalyptic game ever made, with a little bit of Gothic thrown in for good measure. its major bad facet is that its story is absolutely incomprehensible, since the devs just give you these massive text dumps right that explain everything (instead of gradually introducing things organically) from the get-go and the Russian to English translation feels rushed, but it's not all bad - the game mechanics are way deeper than you'd expect (even if some of them are poorly explained) the combat is enjoyable, and the quests are generally good. it costs less than 3 dollars too, so i'd say it's worth a try: store.steampowered.com/app/812980/POSTWORLD/
